SYNOPSIS
The Last Chair is a Virtual Reality documentary series about the last stage of life. With a mix of audio, 360o video and animation you step into the daily life of Fred or Egbert.
When putting on the VR glasses, the viewer delves into the lives of two very different elderly people: Egbert and Fred. Each story begins on that special chair in the house where Egbert or Fred spend more time. Thus, the story begins from the perspective of the elderly; you find yourself in the chair in which these seniors spend more and more time during the last years of their lives. From this seat, with the most necessary items at your fingertips, you look back on the life lived and towards the inevitable end. Life seems to have reduced itself to the immediate space where you are in; a small farmer’s kitchen, a lush garden, the world of thought appears infinite. The world seems to be full of stories, reflections filled with regrets as well as blissful memories.
The voices of the elderly (narrated in English by legendary actors Rutger Hauer and Derek de Lint) take you into the story and slowly change the perspective; you move to other places in and around the house, the character is in the room with you busy with daily chores. You experience the dynamics of daily life and get acquainted with the resident. With a mix of sound, 360o video and drawings, you slowly become immersed in their lives and experience what it’s like to live in the last years of your life? How do you enjoy your life as a gardener when you could have been a jogi? What does ‘home’ mean when you’ve never lived anywhere else?
